Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Direct Primary care (DPC)?
DPC is an innovative primary care model of medicine in which the physicians and patients are put back in charge of healthcare by removing insurances. DPC practices offer a full range of primary care services for a monthly or annual retainer fee paid directly to the practice.
-
Is Direct Primary Care the same as concierge medicine?
No. Concierge services often cost several thousands dollars more per year. Unlike DPC doctors, concierge physicians charge a patient's insurance company for their visit in addition to charging a membership fee. The patient is then responsible for the membership fee as well as any insurance co-payments and deductibles. Our goal is to keep prices fair with care that’s simple, accessible, personal, comprehensive, transparent, and affordable.
-
Is DPC insurance?
No. DPC is not insurance. The monthly service fee is your payment for ongoing primary care services offered by your physician. We strongly recommend that patients do have insurance or cost sharing plans for care that may be needed beyond what we offer (specialty care, ER, hospitalization, surgery, etc.). In general, DPC pairs well with high deductible health plans or medical cost sharing plans such as Zion Health or Sedera. Cost-sharing plans often give discounts for DPC members.
-
Do you take my insurance?
No. We do not accept or bill health insurance. In the DPC model, we contract directly with you (the patient), not an insurance company; to provide quality care. By eliminating the restrictions and frustrations associated with health insurance, we keep costs low and spend as much time as needed with our patients.
-
Can I use my insurance elsewhere if I join The Gold Standard Health?
Yes. Your insurance plans will continue to operate like normal. Some HMO-style plans do require an “in-network” primary care doctor for access to other services, so these plans do not pair as well with membership at The Gold Standard Health. Please check with your insurance company.
-
Can I be a member if I am on Medicare/Medicaid?
No. By law, The Gold Standard Health cannot receive payments from patients currently enrolled with Medicaid/Medicare at this time. Please contact us to be added to our waiting list so you can be notified as soon as we are able to enroll Medicare/Medicaid patients.
-
What if I need a specialist?
Dr. Walker is happy to refer you to specialists if needed. If you have insurance or cost sharing plan and wish to use that for a specialist appointment you can check with the specialists office if they accept the insurance plan. We do not do any prior authorizations for insurances. Some HMO-style plans do require an “in-network” primary care doctor for referrals and do not work wIll with a DPC practice. f you aren't sure whether your insurance works with seeing Dr. Walker please call and ask your insurance.
-
Do you see children?
Yes! Dr. Walker Is happy to take care of the entire family. At this time we do not provide routine vaccinations fo children, but as volume grows we hope to include in-office vaccines. Until then, we will work with you to arrange necessary vaccines.
Dr. Walker strongly recommends on-time routine immunization of all children and adolescents according to the Recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule. -
Do you see patients via telemedicine?

We all understand that we are human and things come up. Dr. Walker will try her best to keep these interruptions at a minimum. She will work to accommodate your health needs, but if she is unable to attend to you immediately for the 3-4 weeks in a year when she is on vacation with her family, she will provide you with alternative options in advance. In those instances the options include but are not limited to urgent care, covering DPC physician, etc.
-
Do you Prescribe Controlled Medications?
Dr. Walker does not prescribe any long term opioids (hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, etc) or benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, etc) for chronic pain or anxiety management. Dr. Walker is happy to work with you on non-narcotic options, referrals to therapy, and education to help optimize pain and anxiety relief.
